While I grew up in the Durham Region, I went to university in Peterborough (shout out to Trent). While living there, I had to keep myself busy somehow, and the best way was to explore the area. Unlike the Durham Region, Peterborough and the Kawarthas in general are a lot less bus-friendly, so you need a car to get around.
Most of the places I explored were outdoor activities that stole a little piece of my heart. I have included a list of outdoor attractions, a separate list for foodies, and a brief event section.
Outdoor Attractions
The Kawartha Region is full of outdoor activities, forests, and lakes. If you have a lot of time to explore and hike around, I would start with Warsaw Caves. At Warsaw Caves you can go spelunking (cave exploring), hiking, and see the wildlife by the pond. P.S. Stay away if you don't like snakes. They are harmless garden snakes, but they are everywhere.
Another must see stop is Ramey Gorge Suspension Bridge. About a half an hour drive from Peterborough, Ramey Gorge is bridge connecting to a nice hiking trail. I will caution you that this is great in the fall and summer, but the bridge and trails get a little slippery in the spring and winter.
Food Stops
The beautiful region also has a bunch of must-see food stops. The first of which is well-known by all Trent students. Whistle Stop Cafe has more than 100 types of poutines in addition to dessert poutines. I will admit I ate here more than I should have during university. They also have some of the best homemade butter tarts around.
Speaking of butter tarts, the Butter Tart Factory recently moved from Warsaw to Peterborough has crazy flavors from snickers to pumpkin pie. If you have a sweet tooth, this is one stop you cannot miss.
Events
Shout out to my beautiful friends from the Cheer team!
Just one event to talk about before I sign off. HOTT or Head of the Trent is Trent University's homecoming. Unlike typical football games, Trent hosts a rowing regatta, as well as has a beer garden, family events, food locations available, and much more. Fair warning, there will be a lot of drunk university students running around if you decide to attend. This event usually takes place at the end of September or beginning of October.
