Reasons You May Be Overtired

We have all experienced a time when we are beyond exhausted, even if we think we are getting enough sleep. But being overtired can occur both physically and mentally and, in turn, can result in lack of productivity, irritability, and other symptoms.

More often than not, people push their bodies to the limit and do not realize how exhausted they are. So, if someone tells you that you look stressed or need a break, take their consideration to heart. Beyond not getting enough sleep, there are several reasons you may be overtired. Take a look at the list below and see if any of these fit the bill.

Just kidding....

Stress

Stress is normal and a lot of times stress is necessary to be successful in daily tasks. That said, too much stress can really put a damper on functionality. Taking time for self care; reading a book, going for a walk, or talking to someone you love is incredibly important. Working 24/7 is not the way to manage your wellbeing. Remember, when you choose to spend time with friends or family, be sure to prioritize people that you don't need energy to be around and not what I call "social drainers."

Health Problems

Some illnesses, whether diagnosed or not can impact a person's energy. In my experience with thyroid issues, hypothyroidism is one very common disease that results in feeling sluggish and unenergized when not medicated properly. Cancer, anxiety, mental health issues, diabetes and other illnesses, especially those that impact hormonal responses can also play a role in being overtired.

Nutrient Deficiencies

What we put into our bodies can play a huge role in how we feel. If you're only eating sugars and desserts, you are likely not getting the vitamins and minerals you need to function. Most commonly, people lack Vitamin D in the winter, a cause of seasonal depression, and a lot of people have iron deficiencies. B12 and Vitamin C are also common deficiencies. Consider taken a multivitamin every morning or a specific supplement if recommended by your doctor.

Caffeine and Hydration

This is one none of us want to hear. Our daily coffee (or preworkout) could be harming us rather than energizing us. When you drink caffeinie it is more difficult to fall into a deep sleep at night, which, in turn, makes us want more coffee the next day and we repeat the toxic cycle. Of course, some of us need coffee to keep our $hit schedule regular, but remember everything is good when in moderation, not in excess.

Along with caffeine intake, people need to ensure they are consuming an adequate amount of water. A lack of water can result in decreased sleep times. Keep in mind, any beverage with caffeine does not count towards your daily water intake.

Overall, everyone needs to keep an eye out for the signs of being overtired and treat the symptoms right away. Taking care of yourself and ensuring you have energy to fuel your day is critical.
